Resident Requests Whole Foods Traffic Study

Carol Band is concerned that the new Arlington Whole Foods will create traffic issues on Bartlett Avenue.

Carol Band, a Bartlett Avenue resident and Town Meeting member, told the Board of Selectmen Monday night that she and other neighboring residents are concerned that the new Arlington Whole Foods will cause traffic and parking issues on their street.

The Whole Foods is set to open at the old Johnnie’s Foodmaster site at 808 Mass. Ave., the corner of Mass. Ave. and Bartlett, next month.

“We’re thrilled to bits that Whole Foods is coming in,” Band said.

However, Band also said residents are concerned about overflow parking on Bartlett and the street being used as a cut-through to Route 2 and Belmont. She suggested the possibility of a “No Left Turn” sign being posted at the parking lot’s exit to direct customers back to Mass. Ave.

Band requested that a traffic study be done before and after Whole Foods opens, but selectmen thought only after made sense, as a study done now wouldn’t take into account what traffic was like when Johnnie’s was open.

The board referred the issue to the town’s Transportation Advisory Committee, which reports to the board.
