In the few short months since their opening, …Cakes Bakery & Cafe has become a popular spot for Milton residents to grab a cup of coffee, something sweet or a quick lunch. With the success of the first retail location, Deana Martin, who owns the bakery along with her husband, Keith, will soon be opening a second location at 795 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington.
After much time spent searching for the right location, and a near fit in the town of Needham, Martin stumbled across Cakes newest location through casual conversation with a friend who lives in Arlington and mentioned a bakery café that had shut down about a year ago.
"I drove by the location and met with the landlord later than day," said Martin. "We signed the lease the following Tuesday."
The location, formerly Sweet Sue's Bakery Café, comes fully equipped with a kitchen, service area, plumbing for coffee and ice machines and a restroom. Martin says that all the space needs is a bit of a "face-lift," that will include painting, sanding and staining hard wood floors and the replacement of the kitchen floor.
Before opening Martin also plans to add some unique touches. "We're planning on making cushions for the banquette out of burlap coffee bags."
Cakes will offer many of the same popular items as their Milton location, like breakfast pastries, cupcakes and custom cakes. The Arlington location will also offer light lunch fare including stews and savory baked goods like tarts, quiches and pot pies. The dining area will have seating for 19 guests. Martin expects that the new location will be open before Halloween, just in time for Arlington residents to stock up on sweet treats.
