13 Arlington Restaurants, Businesses That Closed in 2013

1.) Nicola Pizza House
Address: 1215 Mass. Ave.
Closing: June
Years open: 42

Nicola Pizza House, the beloved Arlington Heights pizza place, closed in June, as its owners, Nicola “Nicky” and Mary Dellacioppa retired after 42 years. They sold the property, which is still vacant, to Tushar Patel, who owns the nearby Peter Pan Superette at 2 Park Ave.

2.) Holovak & Coughlin

Address: 14 Mill St.
Closing: May
Years open: 49

Holovak & Coughlin, the family-run sporting goods store on Mill Street, was sold to Dallas-based BSN Sports, the largest distributor of team sports apparel and equipment in the United States, in May.

3.) Panera Bread

Address: 1398 Mass. Ave.
Closing: March
Years open: 15

Despite its popularity, the Arlington Heights Panera closed in late March because the cafe wasn’t up to the company’s standards. The Heights Panera was the second in the Boston area when it opened in 1998. There are still four nearby: in Cambridge’s Fresh Pond and Porter Square, Lexington Center and Waltham. Those looking for a bagel in the Heights need not worry too, as Bagelville is expected to open soon.

4.) Jam’n Java

Address: 594 Mass. Ave.
Closing: October
Years open: 6

Jam’n Java, the Arlington Center cafe, closed in early October and soon became Kickstand Cafe.

5.) Jade Garden

Address: 1360 Mass. Ave.
Closing: January
Years open: More than 10

Jade Garden, the family-owned Chinese restaurant in Arlington Heights, closed in early January. The space soon became Szechuan’s Dumpling.

6.) Ryan’s Florist

Address: 346 Mass. Ave.
Closing: September
Years open: More than 50

Ryan’s Florist closed in late September. Arlington native Diane Meiklejohn Carney owned it for the last decade, Charlie Ferguson for the decades before her.

7.) Paper & More

Address: 1040 Mass. Ave.
Closing: September
Years open: 25

Paper & More, the independently owned party goods store, closed in late September.

8.) Broadway Diner

Address: 117 Broadway
Closing: October
Years open: 6

Broadway Diner, the East Arlington diner, closed in later October. The space is still vacant.

9.) Scugnizzi Pizza & Kitchen

Address: 450 Mass. Ave.
Closing: August
Years open: 1

The Board of Selectmen shut down Scugnizzi, the Italian restaurant in Arlington Center, in August, as the owner and manager listed on its licenses were no longer involved with the business. Scugnizzi had been named Buona Vita Cucina Italiana prior to July 2012.

10.) Tom Yum Koong II

Address: 1377 Mass. Ave.
Closing: September
Years open: 4

Tom Yum Koong II, the Thai restaurant in Arlington Heights, closed in early September. However, a new Thai restaurant, Thai E-Sarn, replaced it less than a month later. Tom Yum Koong III in Newton also closed this year. The original Tom Yum Koong in Medford Square is still open.

11.) The Savory Plate

Address: 1346 Mass. Ave.
Closing: November
Years open: 21 months

The Savory Plate, the Arlington Heights eatery/prepared-foods store, closed in early November after opening in February 2012.

12.) Batiz

Address: 1179 Mass. Ave.
Closing: June
Years open: 18 months

Batiz, the Mass. Ave. boutique, closed in mid-June.

13.) Napoli Kitchen

Address: 1345 Mass. Ave.
Closing: May
Years open: 9 months

Napoli Kitchen changed over to Bill’s House of Pizza in May.
