I know I have been writing about the high schools performing arts groups, but since the school year will be over soon, I thought I would switch it up for the summer. I have been elected President of Arlington High School's SAVE (Students Against Violations of the Environment) club and I couldn't be more excited. I have a show at Arlington's cable studio ACMi about the environment, and I will be taking environmental science next year as my science class. I think it's safe to say I am very passionate about this topic. It's an issue that shows up in the news every day, and you can make a small change in your life, but a big difference for the planet.
My show, called Wicked Green, focuses on going green locally. We have been going through some restructuring ideas lately, so I haven't filmed in about two months, but I have already filmed eight episodes and I am going to call that my first season. In season two, we are not only changing the set, but we (my co-producers and I) are going to add different segments to make learning about the environment more fun and easier for you to do at home. I also want to make those changes because I am curious to learn different aspects of what's happening to our environment, how it's changing, what our affect is on it, and what we can do to help.
In SAVE club, we not only recycle bottles and cans around school, but we host movie nights, create presentations for science classes, and try to educate our fellow students on how one small action can have such a big impact. We are holding a rummage sale on AHS' front lawn on Saturday, June 18th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. We start taking donations from 8 a.m. on, and I encourage everyone to come and make a difference by reusing old items and reducing how many new products you buy!
At my house, we have a recycling system: one bin for returnables, and one bin for recyclables that will be picked up during the week. I check every containers label to see if it can be recycled. Reusable bags are floating all around the house, and we even reuse newspaper bags to clean up after the dog. We are also very big on taking home food we don't finish and using leftovers as the next day's lunch. My parents have been showing me ever since I was young that you can do your part to help out quite easily, and it's really stuck with me. I'm very grateful to them for that.
If you have any tips or facts or news that you want to share, comment or shoot me a message! Because together, we can make a difference.
