The town recently released its list of roads that will be repaved this spring, summer or fall. The roads were selected via the most recent pavement condition survey and criteria from the town’s Pavement Management System, according to the town. The roads will be repaved by the town’s paving contractor, D&R Paving, in conjunction with the Department of Public Works. Here’s the list, with estimated start times (subject to change due to weather or scheduling changes): Highland Avenue (Gray Street to Eastern Avenue), Spring 2013 Park Avenue Extension (Summer Street to Forest Street), Spring 2013 …
If you’ve gone past Frozland recently, surely you’ve noticed all of the progress. The bright orange awning and inflatable penguins in the window are hard to miss. It actually looks open, but when will it? Frozland’s owner, Sobhy Ibrahim, said Thursday that he’s just waiting on the final town inspection, which should take place early next week. He said he plans to open right after that, so middle to end of next week. Frozland, at 882B Mass. Ave., diagonally across from Arlington High School, will be Arlington’s first “froyo” spot, but another one, Yummy’s, has been approved for 474 Mass. Ave. …
As we’re sure you know by now, the Boston area has a ton going on this Patriots’ Day weekend, from the reenactments in Lexington and Concord to Monday’s Boston Marathon, which 44 Arlington residents are signed up to run. But what you may not know is all of the events going on here in Arlington. Here’s a handy list provided by the town. SATURDAY, APRIL 13 Housewarming Celebration at the Jason Russell House The Arlington Historical Society welcomes you to the Jason Russell House to celebrate the recent discovery that a portion of this Menotomy homestead dates to 1684. In the spirit of family …
This article has been updated. ---------- If you see a police dive team near the River Street Bridge this morning or early afternoon, don’t be alarmed – police are just searching for a firearm that was allegedly thrown into the Mystic River, according to Arlington Police Capt. Richard Flynn. Arlington police and the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team should be in the area starting at about 11 a.m. Thursday, he said. The firearm is related to an ongoing drug investigation by the Arlington Police Criminal Investigation Bureau, he said.
It’s no April Fools’ joke: Anthony’s East Side Deli is opening at 8 a.m. Monday morning. The new East Arlington deli is at 159 Mass. Ave., the former home of Audio Video Plus at the corner of Mass. Ave. and Marathon Street. The deli’s owner is Anthony Masci, a lifelong Arlington resident who currently lives on Acton Street in the Heights. Masci previously owned Maria’s Italian Cold Cuts when it was in Somerville’s Winter Hill neighborhood from 2008-2010. For more on Anthony’s East Side Deli, see its website, which includes a menu, Facebook page and Twitter handle, @_AnthonysDeli. The deli …
You have limited time to get an asiago cheese bagel, order a “You Pick 2,” or “add a pastry item for 99 cents” in Arlington Heights. The Heights’ Panera Bread is closing for good at the end of the business day (10 p.m.) Tuesday, March 26, a company spokeswoman and an employee confirmed Friday. The company announced earlier this month that it would be closing the bakery, at 1398 Mass. Ave., after a 15-year run. At that time, a company spokeswoman said “it has been difficult to achieve the standards [the company believes] will meet customer expectations” at the Arlington location. After it’s …
By now you probably know, something's going on at the Arlington Heights Busway across from Panera. Four new windows, a door and another window-sized rectangle have been cut into the depot’s Mass. Ave.-facing mural, “Celebrating Arlington’s Past and Present.” Paul Revere? Gone. Uncle Sam? Gone. The “Entering Arlington” sign? Gone too, as are a number of Minutemen. But what exactly is up? What’s moving in? “The Right Spot Convenience Store,” a store sponsored by the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind Small Business Enterprise Program and the MBTA, according to a sign in one of the building’…
Drivers who are considering a switch to electric vehicles or current owners looking for a place to charge their rides have a couple of options near Arlington to find their outlet. For Arlington, the closest charging stations are in Cambridge at Alewife Station and Porter Square Shopping Center and in Lexington Center at 4 Grant St., according to crowd-sourced website carstations.com. Carstations allows users to upload new car charging locations to a Google map and (when applicable) provides details on the station. According to the site's About section, "this website is designed to encourage …
You know the old saying "Fall back, spring forward." Well, it's almost time to spring forward. So, when does Daylight Saving 2013 begin? This year we move the clocks overnight on Sunday, March 10. Don't forget to move your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed Saturday night. Officially Daylight Saving is 2 a.m. on Sunday. Yes, moving the clocks ahead does mean we all lose an hour of sleep, but in return it will be light later in the day. Besides, the lost hour falls on Saturday night, so just sleep in a bit on Sunday before getting up and starting the day.
It’s a question we get asked a lot: “How do I submit a Letter to the Editor?” And with the Mass. Ave. Corridor Project, overnight parking and a host of candidates on the April ballot, and a bottled-water ban, revised leaf-blower ban, self-serve gasoline and medical-marijuana dispensaries set to go before Town Meeting later that month, we thought there was no better time to answer. (Don’t get us wrong, Letters to the Editor don’t have to be political. Sometimes the small issues resonate the most.) There are two ways to submit a Letter to the Editor to Arlington Patch: 1. As a blog post. …
If you drove past Bartlett Avenue Tuesday evening, you may have noticed that section of the road was closed and that there was a film crew and lights near its intersection with Wildwood Avenue. What was the film crew doing there? Filming a commercial for ’47 Brand, a sports apparel company, according to Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine. We reached out to representatives from ’47 Brand earlier this week and will let you know if we hear more about the ad and where you’ll be able to see it. If you live in that area and have more information or photos/videos from the shoot, please comment below and …
The first day of school next school year for Arlington public school students in grades 1-12 will be Tuesday, Sept. 3, according to a recent district announcement. The first day for kindergartners will be Monday, Sept. 9. Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 2, in 2013. This school year, students in grades 1-12 returned the Thursday after Labor Day, Sept. 6.
The new last day of school for Arlington’s public school students is now Thursday, June 27 – yes, just one week before the Fourth of July. Arlington used two snow days for the recent blizzard and missed two more days during Hurricane Sandy. The district now has one scheduled snow day left. Superintendent Kathleen Bodie said Thursday that she plans to survey employees about possible contingency plans – such as a half day on Good Friday (Friday, Marcy 29) or using a Saturday or April vacation day.
By now you may have seen the two new signals at the Minuteman bike path’s Mill Street crossing. (They went up last week.) But you may still have some questions: Why did they go up? Who paid for them? How do they work? Well, we recently tracked down the people in the know, and here is what they had to say: The developer of the new Alta Brigham Square apartments, Wood Partners, was required to improve this crossing as part of their special building permit with the town, according to the town’s engineer, Wayne Chouinard. Wood Partners contracted Bill Scully, a planner now with Westford-based …
