On Friday night, Saxafras took to the stage at Town Hall for the second installment of the Menotomy Concert Series. Arlington resident and veteran musician Tom Ferrante leads the troupe of accomplished musicians, featuring a quartet of saxophonists with a drummer and guitarist. There are two main areas in Arlington that have the best lights in town. The first is in East Arlington over by Sabatino's Restaurant and the Capit0l Theater, just south of Spy Pond Park on Route 2A. Swing by Lake Street for a series of beautiful displays all the way down the road. Immediately next to Lake Street, Orvis Street also has a series of Christmas lights adorning both sides of the street. At the end of Orvis, Freeman Street boasts another group of lighted homes. About 40 cyclists in holiday-themed costumes set off on the 14th annual Jingle Ride on Sunday from Jam'n Java, for a jaunt into Boston along the Minuteman Bikeway Rail-Trail. Riders decorated their bicycles, which ranged from racing bikes to tandems, with bells, Christmas trees and antlers, while many participants wore ribbons, bows and other ornaments on their helmets. "It's really all about fun," said event founder Lauren Hefferon, sporting a Rudolph costume and a splotch of red paint on her nose. "We sing and we carol and we have a good time." Winter sports are officially in full swing now, as teams from both of the local high schools kicked off their 2010-2011 seasons last week. Here's a look at how Arlington High School and Arlington Catholic athletes fared in the pool, on the ice and on the courts. AHS Swimming The Spy Ponders swim team kicked off their season with a home meet versus Concord –Carlisle, but was unable to open up with a win. The Chelmsford High School boys ice hockey team shut out Arlington High School 5-0 on Saturday night in Chelmsford. In the second period, senior Kevin Driscoll scored two goals. He was assisted by Sean O'Saunghnessy, Tom Bishop, and David DeDonato. In the third period, Bill Kamenides, David DeDonato, and Drew Dawson scored, assisted by Kyle Edmonds, Matt Powers, Jon Fairbanks, and Bill Kamenides; respectively.
Either Orchestra Band held their 25th Anniversary Concert this week at the Regent Theatre, will a performance bursting at the seams with Latin and African-infused jazz music. 26 jazz musicians filled the Regent stage to create a larger than life sound for their quarter-century commemoration. The Arlington High School cheer team will be the first ever Massachusetts team to compete and perform at the Gator Bowl. After a steady competition schedule over the past few years, an anonymous fan letter won over the judges, making the Spy Ponders one of twenty teams selected to perform at the event, after hundreds reportedly applied. The team is heading down to Jacksonville right before New Years. The Spy competing on December 29 and perform for the Gator Bowl on January 1. All four hockey teams from Arlington High School and Arlington Catholic got their seasons underway on Saturday at the annual Arlington Jamboree. The AC boys squad fell to Burlington 1-0 and reached an 0-0 stalemate with AHS. The Spy Ponder boys also fell to Burlington by a score of 2-0. On the girls side, Arlington High School bested Arlington Catholic 2-0 in an emotionally-charged and very physical match-up. Thanks to the hard work of a group of local volunteers, terminally ill patients throughout the state will receive the nutrition they need this holiday season. Team Pie it Forward, comprised of businessmen and women from Arlington, Belmont, Cambridge, Boston, Charlestown and Newton hit the pavement to sell pies for Community Servings Annual Pie in the Sky Fundraiser. The proceeds from the event will help the organization to prepare and deliver daily meals to terminally ill patients throughout the state. Old Schwamb Mill opened its doors on Saturday to celebrate its 40th anniversary as a museum and to host the closing of the art show "Zoning In." The Old Schwamb Mill produces quality wooden frames, each one made individually using the old - and well maintained - equipment. They are easily recognizeable by their circular shape and four "finger" joints. To boost public interest and attract business, the Mill holds frequent art shows, gives regular tours and establishes connections with metro Boston galleries.
Over 50 local artists working in all different mediums displayed their work at the opening of "Plenty," 13Forest Gallery's latest show. The pieces featured in "Plenty" are modest in size and budget, with an eye toward gift-giving for the holiday season. The display will be open now through January 28.
Shoppers were encouraged to line up early for Friday and Saturday's women's clothing sale to benefit Fox Library. This year's event featured a wide array of garments, accessories and housewares, all at bargain prices. Proceeds from the semi-annual sale have helped make it possible for the Fox to remain open a third day each week and have helped fund special programs, events, and improvements to the library space.
Politicians, residents, veterans and family members all braved the cold on Veterans Day to remember and honor lost soldiers and those still fighting. Sean Harrington served as Grand Marshall of the annual parade to honor his work to bring the Pledge of Allegiance back to Arlington High School.
