Arlington Native Dane Cook Starring in New NBC Comedy

Cook's pilot, 'Next Caller,' recently got picked up by the network. Will you be watching?

Comedian and Arlington native Dane Cook recently had his pilot, “Next Caller,” picked up by NBC for six episodes. Cook, who graduated from Arlington High in 1990, has starred on the big screen, in movies such as “My Best Friend’s Girl” and “Employee of the Month,” but this will be his first leading role on TV. As HitFix.com puts it: “Collette Wolfe and Dane Cook don’t like each other because, see, he’s an unkempt, immature DJ and she’s the blonde, perky new co-host he didn’t ask for. Hilarity ensues?” Here is NBC’s synopsis: What happens when a foulmouthed satellite radio DJ - played by the multi-platinum selling artist and outrageously charming Dane Cook - is forced to share the mic with a chipper NPR feminist? It's anyone's call in this …

Spring Strawberries and Cream on Biscuits

Pair fresh strawberries with sugar, cream and buttermilk biscuits for a delicious Spring dessert.

"One must ask children and birds how cherries and strawberries taste." ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe I noticed the other day that our strawberry plants are beginning to grow and I already can't wait to pick them fresh from the garden. They are much smaller than the berries you get at the supermarket but they are sweeter and tastier. I immediately began to crave strawberry shortcake. I stopped at the market and found some nice red ripe strawberries but there were no packages of shortcakes in sight. I thought about making my own (nah, too lazy). I looked at the angel food cake (nah, not one of my favorites). Then I wandered over to get the cream and there was my answer...buttermilk biscuits. Just pop open the can, throw 'em in the oven and …

There Will Be Wine

The Arlington Farmers' Market was recently given approval to have a local winery as a vendor.

For 14 years, the Arlington Farmers’ Market has been providing area residents with all of the necessary ingredients to make a nice, home-cooked meal. This year, that won’t change, but for the first time, the market will be adding the perfect compliment: Wine. At the request of the market’s manager, Patsy Kraemer, the Board of Selectmen passed a motion last week allowing a local winery, Turtle Creek in Lincoln, to sell wine at the market, which returns Wednesday, June 13, in Arlington Center’s Russell Common Parking Lot. “I think we should go forward with this,” Selectman Daniel J. Dunn said of Kraemer’s proposal. “Let’s give it a go, and see if it works. I don’t envision it being a problem.” Since the state legislature started allowing …

'Grey Gardens' Opens Tonight

The Arlington Friends of the Drama production runs through Sunday, April 15, at the AFD Theatre on Academy Street. Showtimes and ticket information are at the bottom of this article.

Editor’s Note: The following is a press release from Arlington Friends of the Drama (AFD Theatre): Arlington Friends of the Drama (AFD Theatre) presents the greater Boston community theater premier of “Grey Gardens.” Edith Bouvier and Edie Beale, the most unique, eccentric relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, are brought to life in the riches-to-rags story of just how far American royalty can fall. A documentary made in 1976 examined the women's remarkable personalities, simultaneously eccentric and electric. The women fascinated America and the documentary developed something of a cult following, who admired the women’s staunch insistence on being themselves in the face of adversity and non-acceptance.  In addition, “Little Edie” had …
