Youth group members at Arlington's St. Paul Lutheran Church could have read the Bible when they met on Sunday. Instead, they decided to make the book's teachings real.

"Most churches have a nice group of older ladies who make quilts and send them to charities," said Katie Osweiler, the church's director of child, youth and family ministries. "We don't have that here, so we are the quilting group."

The youth group is comprised of middle and high school students. For the next few weeks, they will meet on their regular time on Sunday morning, but instead of reading and talking about compassion and helping others, they will be busy exercising those virtues by making as many as 11 quilts.

“A lot of these kids live a pretty privileged life, and I think understading there is a lot of need in the world is important,” said Jennifer Nahn, whose son Gabriel, an Arlington High School sophomore, is one of the quilters.

Materials for the quilts come from within the church, and the finished product will be sent to Lutheran World Relief, a wing of the Lutheran Church dedicated to aiding the needy.

Hannah Lienhard, 14, said she is big on volunteering, which is something she described as often being overlooked.

"When we do something like this, we’re able to see into other people’s world and expand our views," said Lienhard, a freshman at Burlington High School. "It helps us be more empathetic to other people and understand what they’re going through, instead of pitying from afar."
