They were not at their home school, but Thompson Elementary School students were just as energetic when they got together on Friday to read through the script of this year's play, an annual tradition at the now-demolished school.

"The kids were very excited to get their parts and see the script for the first time," said Kelli Murphy, one of the event organizers.

For a a few years now, the Thompson community has come together to produce semi-original plays that celebrate students and delight parents. The shows are usually written, produced, directed and designed by parents and caregivers while students provide onstage talent.

This year, Producer Julie Lucey said, parents received permission from Gregory Maguire, creator of the Broadway play "Wicked," to adapt one of his books, "Leaping Beauty."

Murphy said three Thompson parents wrote the first draft of the play, for which students auditioned early January. On Friday, they met at Arlington High School to begin rehearsing for the show, which should open in April.

Murphy said the program has faced many challenges this year, mostly because of the students' scattered locations during rebuilding. But to help with that, the Arlington community has “really stepped up to help.”
