The truck that crashed is owned by JP Noonan Transportation of West Bridgewater. The driver was a 65-year-old Framingham man who is currently in serious condition at Beth Israel Hospital, said State Police.

State Police have not filed charges at this point and are not releasing his name at this time.

Many of the emergency personnel who responded to the scene from other communities to help with the clean-up have cleared the scene, but there are still members of the haz-mat team, firefighters and police at the scene. The roadway remains closed.

UPDATED, 6:44 p.m.: Firefighters and haz-mat teams remain at the scene. They are on land and in boats on the Mystic River working on the hazardous material clean-up. The Department of Environmental Protection is also on scene.

The area is still closed to traffic.

UPDATED, 6:24 p.m.: EkOngKar Singh Khalsa, director of the Mystic River Watershed Association, said fuel entered the Mystic River immediately after the crash.

A member of the Mystic River Watershed Association was kayaking near the bridge when the accident occurred, he said. She told Khalsa that fuel immediately started to discharge from the storm drain under the bridge “like water from a hydrant.”

Khalsa said he reached out to the Department of Environmental Protection, but they were already headed to the scene.

Khalsa said this incident is a “big deal for local residents and everyone who has worked so hard” to improve water quality in the river.

“We feel very badly for the driver’s injuries and no one intended this to happen, but this is really a big deal for the river. Unfortunately, the fuel oil has gone into the river,” said Khalsa.

UPDATED, 5:49 p.m.: Police Chief Fred Ryan told Patch that the truck was coming from Medford over the bridge and into the rotary when the driver lost control, flipped his truck and was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver was rushed to Beth Israel Hospital. There is no word on his condition.

Ryan said the spillage has stopped from the vehicle. Haz-mat teams are on scene working to contain the spill.

Deputy Fire Chief Chip Ryan is incident commander at the scene.
