Should Arlington Schools Be Open Today?

They are, but was it the right call? Let us know by posting a comment below.

Arlington Superintendent Kathleen Bodie decided to have the town’s public school students return to school today, after giving them Friday and Monday off due to the blizzard.

Students will be dismissed at 1 p.m. today but this is due to today being a previously scheduled early dismissal day.

We want to know: Do you agree with the superintendent’s decision to reopen schools today? Let us know by posting a comment below.

Some things to consider:

The district closed schools Monday because clearing needed to be done in front of and around schools and walking routes to school were deemed unsafe, according to Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine. The town’s leaders were especially concerned about high snow banks near crosswalks.

The last day of school is now Thursday, June 27, meaning that if the district closed today and then had just one more snow day, the last day of school would have been Monday, July 1, or the district would have had to cut into a weekend or April vacation. In addition to this past Friday and Monday, the district closed twice during Hurricane Sandy.

The East Arlington parking is still in effect through at least today.

Today should be sunny with a high near 45, according to the National Weather Service.

What a farce. The APS has had two full weeks of school since last September. If you go to drop off or pickup your child and the sidewalks are inaccessible or the streets too narrow for safety, go to the next School Committee meeting and express your displeasure.

The plowing on a lot of streets are a mess. Two way streets are now one way with pedestrians walking on tbe street because the sidewalks are not shoveled. Parking is almost none. The schools should have remained closed and the DPW could have done more OPERATION PUSH BACK to clear the streets. Maple street that leads to the Senior Center is like one plow drove by only once and that was on the center of the street.

DPW did not open up the crosswalks to the school grounds at the Peirce School. The children were forced to walk on the very busy Summer Street and Park Ave Ext in order to enter the school grounds. Black ice was on the side of roads and sidewalks. My daughter and I both fell on Park Ave Ext on our way to school.

I started seeing the sun Saturday about 10:30. They had from then until Monday morning. Yeah there was a lot of snow but there was none on the ground beforehand and it wasn't heavy wet snow like sometimes. Seems like enough time for sure.

On the other hand, Arlington Schools don't take much to close. And the most ridiculous thing is - Tuesday is a scheduled half day??? So unschedule it and get back to work after two snow days.

The biggest problem for us was the neighbors who didn't shovel their sidewalks. On a 5 block walk there were at least a dozen houses where the sidewalks weren't shoveled, It's shameful that they can shovel their own driveways but can't do the sidewalks for pedestrians and kids? The town should be giving them citations and charging them money

My daughter and I mostly walked in the street because the sidewalks were a skating rink this morning. Took us about 50% longer than normal to get to Hardy school. I'm in favour of the schools being open but many people are not adequately shoveling or putting down ice melt on their sidewalks.

School was fine this morning. Did you have to careful, yes. Were the school grounds cleared and passable - yes at Stratton. Did all the neighbors shovel sidewalks- most did, others should be fined. We're cross walks clear- yes around the schools. How far do you want the town to clear crosswalks 7-8 blocks? This isn't Lexington - sorry folks that's the fact. Town did a good job with the resources they have. Want more, ask for an override.

The town did a great job removing the snow considering the amount we got. Its the residents that failed to remove the snow. We get fines for leaving our trash barrels out on the curb the day after pick up but not fines for being lazy about shoveling our walk ways?

They should be penalizing people today if the sidewalks aren't done - they've had late Sat/Sun/Monday to shovel. But it is icy out there - I had meltwater running down the slight grade of my sidewalk, which I had cleared well. It froze last night, even after dumping a whole container of melter onto the stretch.. Dumped another container this morning, hopefully that clears off during above-freezing hours.

So go after the most egregious examples, but be aware its going to be slippery for a while...

Suck it up. Go to school. A little inconvenience is not going to kill anyone.

I applaud the administration for minimizing the disruption. I have a friend who is a teacher in CT and she has heard rumors that the entire week will be cancelled.

Hi folks: We live in Massachusetts. Best to teach your kids -- NOW -- how to navigate on foot when sidewalks are icy or crosswalks aren't cleared. Enough with relying on your car for every bit of your transportation needs. Trust me, any motorists out there were aware that the pedestrian conditions can be dangerous, and were exercising caution. Regarding homeowners who do not shovel their sidewalks -- there should be an easy and anonymous way of reporting them by phone or internet. And, the Town should mobilize all public servants who work in the field to enforce statutes about clearing sidewalks and about parking on sidewalks. That means cops, firefighters, public works. If we're serious about "PUBLIC SAFETY," then do something about it, and don't let work rules get in the way. Public Works did a good job with the plows...they just need to do a better job of communicating the priorities and the status to the public. Easy to do with the right internet tools.

Completely disagree. I don't think it is a good idea to send a kid out in blizzard conditions to walk over a mile to school. It doesn't matter how careful drivers are being, they can lose control of their vehicle in these conditions, and hit a child trying to walk. If the town doesn't have the streets plowed in time for school to start, and people haven't had time to shovel the walks, it is dangerous and a public safety issue. In the last snow storm they cancelled school for a second day- two days after the snow had stopped- in order to clear sidewalks and roads for kids to make it to school safely. Two of my kids are stranded at home because we literally couldn't make it up the hill to get out of our neighborhood and we do not live close to their schools. My HS student did walk to school so that he could be counted as there in order to be able to go to rehearsal after school and turn in a project. Safety concerns should always come first and I don't think town officials followed this today.
