Self-Serve 'Froyo' Craze Coming to Arlington?

A new self-serve spot is on the Board of Selectmen's next agenda.

It had Arlington surrounded, and now it appears the self-serve “froyo” craze is finally coming to town.

A sign boasting “Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt Coming Soon” recently appeared in the front window of 882B Mass. Ave., the vacant space next to Lady Siam and diagonally across from Arlington High School. And now, “Frozland Frozen Yogurt” is going for a common victualler or operating license for that space at Monday’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting, according to the board’s agenda.

The business is being proposed by Sobhy I. Ibrahim. The meeting starts at 7:15 p.m. Monday in the Selectmen’s Chambers on the second floor of Town Hall.

The self-serve “froyo” craze has hit Arlington’s borders hard in the last year. Two self-serve spots, Fruitee Yogurt and Orange Leaf, opened in Lexington Center about a year ago, and two more, iYo Cafe and again Orange Leaf, came to Somerville’s Davis Square in August and November, respectively.

A Pinkberry was also slated for Davis Square this fall but withdrew its application after it appeared it would be denied.

Frozland already has a Yelp page, although it is limited.

What’s your take on the self-serve “froyo” craze? And which do you prefer: “froyo” or regular ol’ ice cream? Let us know by posting a comment below.

We have Brighams and we have an ice cream shop in the center so let's have a frozen yogurt shop like Berryline

I Googled that company and couldn't find anything - who are they? The iYo yogurt in Davis Square is really awful - tastes like chemicals. I hope this company makes a natural product - especially if our high school kids are going to be eating it.

Yippee...I can hardly wait!! Yes, IYo yogurt, I've also heard, is terrible. It will be another "hit or miss", probably a miss, for this town. Arlington is getting to be a really weird town to live in !!!

I love frozen yogurt - have driven quite a distance to Pinkberry or Berryline to satisfy a craving and would love someplace closer. Agree 100% on the all natural, quality ingredients. Personally I don't care about the self serve aspect… the product quality is far more important!

The business won't survive for long. The location is bad for pedestrian traffic, The product sounds sub-par based on other readers' comments, and the price this location was asking for a lease is unrealistic for a profitable business. Doomed to failure.

It will be the first self serve frozen yogurt store for more fun. This store has rear parking for more convenience. I wish it good luck.
