Section of Bike Path Closed Today, Maybe Wednesday
Crews will be cleaning up trees damaged in the East Arlington microburst.
Today is Tuesday, Oct. 23. Here are five things you need to know:
1.) From the town: Bike Path Closed from Swan Place to Linwood Street Today, Maybe Wednesday: Weather permitting the section of the Minuteman bike path, from Swan Place to Linwood Street, will be closed between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, and possibly, Wednesday, Oct. 24, to allow for safe removal of trees damaged in the microburst this past summer. All modes of travel (pedestrian, bicycles) will not be allowed on this section. Please observe “Do Not Enter” signs and seek alternate routes around this work area.
2.) From the town: Fire Hydrant Inspection and Flushing Began Yesterday: Starting Monday, Oct. 22, the Arlington Fire Department began its annual service inspection of all fire hydrants in every neighborhood in town. This process is expected to end the first week of November. Please note, hydrant flushing being performed by the DPW Water Division in East Arlington continues to the end of November.
Hydrants in town will be opened, flowed and drained of excess water. This procedure helps prevent hydrants from freezing during winter months. If you experience rusty water in your home or business the fire department advises that you run the faucets until you have clean water. Do not run your hot water or do laundry until your water is clear. This is not an unsafe condition and is expected in most cases. However, if problems persist please contact the Arlington Water Department, 781-316-3300.
3.) From the town: Fall Street Sweeping Begins Monday, Oct. 29: The Public Works Department will begin the town-wide fall street sweeping schedule on Monday, Oct. 29, with route 1. Routes are generally swept sequentially, the last route being 35. Weather permitting, the fall sweep should conclude in December when snow fall makes it impossible to continue.
Please note, according to the town bylaw, Prohibition Against Obstruction Public Ways, it is forbidden to deposit debris in public ways. To help us perform the best possible job, please park your cars off-street during your scheduled week. Parked cars prevent a clean sweep. The DPW will not return to sweep streets due to cars parked during the initial visit.
The town posts the street sweeping schedule online and will be updating it weekly (Mondays) until the fall sweep is completed. You can view this schedule and find out what route your street is on at arlingtonma.gov/streetsweeping.
4.) The Arlington High boys’ and girls’ cross country teams will be at Winchester at 3:45 p.m. this afternoon. The Arlington Catholic girls’ soccer team will be at St. Mary’s of Lynn at 6 p.m., the Cougars’ volleyball team will be at Austin Prep at the same time.
5.) Today should be mostly sunny with a high near 64, according to the National Weather Service.
