Readers: Drivers Speed Most on Gray Street, Highland Avenue
See if your street made the list of where drivers tend to speed in Arlington.
On Monday, we asked you: Where do drivers speed in Arlington?
And although your answers varied, four streets definitely stood out: Gray Street, Highland Avenue, Appleton Street (from Park Avenue to Paul Revere Road) and Jason Street.
More people said Gray Street than any other, while Highland Avenue was a close second.
Here is a glimpse of what people had to say:
Gray Street
“Gray Street, it’s shocking how fast people go sometimes,” Christie Young.
“Gray Street, especially coming down from Churchill Avenue to the Jason Street intersection. Posted 20 mph speed limit, totally ignored. Brakes screeching constantly, many don’t even bother to slow down. Also going up Gray Street from the Jason Street intersection, most gut it and are airborne by the time they hit the hill. Far too many accidents at Gray and Jason Street and at Gray and Bartlett Avenue,” Diane Ingvarsson.
Highland Avenue
“People speed down [Highland Avenue] from Gray Street, and I can’t tell you how many accidents I have witnessed at the corner of Highland and Wildwood Avenue. There are stop signs there, but people frequently ignore them. At one time, we requested flashing red stop lights, but the town said ‘NO’ and probably put that money toward a dog and cat grazing park or some other such thing,” Drew.
Appleton Street, from Park Avenue to Paul Revere Road
“There should be lights or a stop sign (at Appleton Street and Paul Revere Road) to slow the traffic,” Malcolm Hamilton.
Jason Street
"I like to drive the speed limit (posted at 20 mph) on Jason Street and irritate the speeders behind me who think they have a shortcut to Route 2. Oh, and I come to a full and complete stop (3-second rule!) at the four-way intersection," K M.
The rest of the streets mentioned:
Campbell Road
Forest Street, from Park Avenue Extension to the Winchester town line
Franklin Street
Lafayette Street
“They fly down my street; it’s unsafe for kids to be out playing,” Annmarie.
Massachusetts Avenue, between Lake and Linwood streets
Massachusetts Avenue at Saint Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church
Marathon Street
Mystic Street (Route 3)
Mystic Valley Parkway (Route 60)
“They come out of the Route 60 rotary like it’s a slingshot!” Marcella Hoekstra.
Oakland Avenue, from Gray Street to Appleton Street
Pleasant Street
Pleasant Street – better known by its inhabitants as “The Wild, Wild West” – only time traffic slows to posted limits or below here is between 4-6 p.m.,” Nas.
Ridge Street

So, what are we going to do about it? I'm dreaming of SPEED BUMPS every few feet on the worst streets.

Dickson Ave is also a problem with speeding and Stratton is one stree over. kids walk to school on Dickson all the time. Also all the traffic from Thompson Kids going to Stratton makes Dickson Ave a real dangerous street with all the speeding. Police men are hanging out at the wrong places. Police need to set up there and catch these speeding cars. Its always the same ones speeding. Once they get that ticket, trust me they wont speed again.
