Postal Service Closings Focus of Tonight's Meeting

East Arlington and Arlington Heights post offices could be closed due to decline in business.

U.S. Postal Service officials will address Arlington residents’ concerns tonight regarding possible branch closures in East Arlington and Arlington Heights.

The two Arlington locations are on a list of 3,700 branches nationwide considered for foreclosure. They are two of Arlington's three post offices, as the list does not include the Postal Service's main branch in Arlington Center.

The Postal Service, which lost $8 billion last year, said the possible closures are due to more and more of its business being conducted online or in grocery, drug of office supply stores, among other retail outlets.

The meeting with Postal Service officials begins at 6 p.m. tonight, Oct. 3, at Town Hall.

I couldn't go to the meeting, but plan on filling out a survey next time I am in the post office. I do as little snail mail as I can, but I always do it at my branch post office unless they are closed. I can get there on foot, it is only a little out of my way if I am picking up or dropping off from school, it is near all the gift stores where I buy gifts to mail, it is on the errand route. Why would I want to make a special trip by car to have trouble parking and wait on an even longer line. There is often a line at certain hours even at the branch post office so I don't know what they mean about a decline in business! A branch post office and branch library are part of what makes our neighborhood pedestrian and user friendly in general. Without them, we become more suburban. I thought we were moving in the direction of more pedestrian friendly not less!
