Pedestrian Struck Near Arlington High School

Incidents and arrests in Arlington from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 8-11.

The following information comes from the Arlington Police Department. When arrests are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Pedestrian Struck Near Arlington High School

A female walking toward Arlington Center on Mass. Ave. Friday afternoon was struck by a vehicle when she was crossing Lockeland Avenue, across from Arlington High School, according to police.

Police, fire and rescue were dispatched to the scene at 2:41 p.m. Friday, shortly after the high school’s dismissal.

The female was knocked to the ground during the collision, police said. She told police that she was experiencing pain in her left arm. She was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital by Lexington Rescue.

She also told police that cars exiting Lockeland Avenue had stopped for her when she decided to cross. She said she was struck when she was about halfway across the street.

The driver told police that she was crossing over Mass. Ave. from Schouler Court at the time of the incident. She said that she had a green light and, due to sun glare, she could not see the female until it was too late. She said she slammed on her brakes at the “very last second.”

There is no painted crosswalk or signal at Lockeland Avenue.

The driver was issued a citation for “failing to slow for a pedestrian in the roadway,” according to police.

Police responded to Linwood Street at 5:51 p.m. Sunday for a report of a vehicle leaking gasoline. The gasoline was spilling in a driveway, according to police. The vehicle was soon towed away.

A Mass. Ave. resident called police at 1:28 a.m. Saturday after he noticed that the vehicle next to his had had one of its windows smashed and its glove compartment ransacked.

Police caught up with the vehicle’s owner later in the day. He said that his $600 phone was missing from the vehicle.

Witness Stops Man from Breaking Into Car

Police responded to the area of Mass. Ave. and Robbins Road at 5:44 p.m. Thursday for a report of a man using a wire device, possibly a coat hanger, to attempt to break into a car.

A witness told police that the man, who appeared to be in his early to mid 30s, wearing black pants and a black sweatshirt, was attempting to break into a gray Honda Accord when she approached him and asked him what he was doing. The man told the witness that he had locked himself out of his car. The man had fled by the time police arrived. Police later contacted the vehicle’s actual owner, who said nothing was missing.

Really...?...what happened to checking both sides of traffic before crossing if you're going to J-WALK? No ticket to the pedestrian? Oh, she had the right of way...and her tax rate is what for using the street? I remember growing up in Arlington and taught to use speed and dilegence when competing with motorized vehicles!!

Mass Ave is deadly. There are alot more cars than ever before and with all the housing being built there will be even more. There should be a cop at the high school morning and afternoons. Last Saturday 11/10 there were 4 police officers at a detail at Summer and Grove streets!! Four to direct traffic but not one to protect our kids!

Really Kelly, you don't think the PD is there only after the fact? How come in all the "blotter" reports they are REPORTING TO AN EVENT and none ever report of stopping in act in progress...I must've missed that one!

Mass Ave is a busy road as Mary stated, maybe if a a uniformed relative of yours would be at the HS to "direct" traffic and help the minors learn to cross the street this could have been avoided.

Doing details from off duty officers is another story! How can a cop with a gun using a high end police cruiser work so many hours and be considered safe, but a truck driver has to rest for 10 hours after 11 hours of driving, imagine if the tables were the same! Must be nice to have lobbyist in your favor.

Never took the civil service test, because I can't tolerate people without COMMON SENSE!

That is one of the silliest comment I have ever read. So according to you the police should not only be crossing guards but be able to stop an event before it happens. What is a high end police cruiser? You also seem to be the one with zero common sense.

You and your pompous attitude!
Evidently reading and comprehending isn't your strong point.
Perhaps you think the PD is there to prevent malicious activities. It was back in the day when "Stretch" would walk Mass Ave, but not that way anymore. High end cruiser? Would you prefer them in a Prius?

At Pat. I was a visiting nurse for several years in Arlington. Tell that to the patients who have permanent disabilities or to the families who have loved ones die after getting hit on Mass Ave or other roads like Pleasant Street. Yes there have been people who died from gettting hit on Mass Ave you just don't hear about the end result. Let it not be you or your loved one that gets hit. you are the ignorant one my friend.

What is a high end cruiser? So Stretch would have prevented people from being hit by cars all up and down Mass Ave? Mary I'm sorry I just don't see your point. I was upset at the anti-police comments and yours makes no sense. I also hope your family is safe.

Re: the incident with the pedestrian... sometimes an accident is just that - an accident. The 4-way intersection at Lockland/MassAve/Schouler Court is definitely a busy one - espcially around start of school & dismissal. There are 2 crosswalks & cross/walk signals for crossing Mass. Ave & 1 for crossing Schouler as well. There is neither a crosswalk nor a crossing/walk signal to use when crossing from the west to the east/ east to the west curbs of Lockeland at Mass. Ave.; no button to push to stop traffic to allow safe passage. Maybe there should be. This was an accident - just an accident; not a careless pedestrian (she started to cross after other cars stopped & indicated to her that she should cross), not a speeding driver (who reports being blinded by solar glare). I am not sure why we need to assign blame to anyone for an accident - they happen. And why anyone would blame the police for not being there on the spot to prevent an accident... well until we have a tool that allows premonitions of where & when an incident will occur, I"m not sure how we can expect that. So we all need to be responsible & do what we can to prevent accidents, but having to blame anyone is just ridiculous. I'm just glad that the injuries sustained were not more severe.
