UPDATED: Off-Duty Officer Saves Woman from Webster Street Fire

Officer Michael Hogan ran into the burning home, according to WCVB.

Update, 10:20 a.m., Thursday, May 30

Arlington Police Officer Michael Hogan said Wednesday every other officer and firefighter in town would’ve done the same thing, and many have before, including Police Capt. Richard Flynn.

On Tuesday, Flynn’s brother, John Flynn, a neighboring resident and engineer, broke down the door with Hogan to get into the house. Hogan carried out the elderly woman, Flynn her daughter.

Hogan’s well known for his K9 partner Dasty and Pan Mass Challenge efforts. (Here’s his Pan Mass fundraising page this year – he’s riding for his wife Nancy, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.) If his name sounds familiar, he also was the first to arrive and help revive a man in cardiac arrest at last September’s Walter V. Moynihan Town Day Road Run.

“I love, love this job,” he said. “I can’t wait to get to work every day.”

An off-duty Arlington police officer rescued an elderly woman Tuesday evening from a burning residence on Webster Street, according to a WCVB.com report.

Michael Hogan, the department’s K9 officer, was training for the Pan Mass Challenge, when he spotted the smoke at 59 Webster St. and ran into help, according to the report. Another nearby resident ran in as well, according to 7News.

The two-alarm fire, which broke out on the home’s second-floor back porch shortly before 6 p.m., drew multiple fire trucks, ambulances and support vehicles from Arlington, Cambridge, Somerville and Medford. Warren and Webster streets were closed as firefighters worked the scene.

A firefighter told WCVB.com that people were smoking outside at the time of the fire.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, according to 7News. Her condition was not known as of late Tuesday night.
