Johnnie's Foodmaster is Closing All 10 Locations

Liquidation sales have already begun.

A week after Johnnie's Foodmaster officially announced that its store in Arlington and five others would become Whole Foods, Boston.com has reported the Chelsea-based supermarket chain is closing all 10 of its locations, including the one in West Somerville just over the Arlington town line at 105 Alewife Brook Parkway.

Boston.com says an Illinois-based company, Hilco Merchant Resources, which specializes in liquidation services, has begun closing sales at all of the Johnnie's Foodmaster markets.

There will be discounts of up to 30 percent, and the closing sales began today, Boston.com reports.

The Whole Foods in Arlington is expected to open in the late summer or early fall of 2013.

Johnnie's customers: Where will you go now? Let us know by posting a comment below.

This stinks. In this economy? Where are all the elderly with their grocery carts shop? Where will families on a budget shop?

Not Whole Foods. I can tell you that.
This definitely changed the grocery landscape. And not for the good.

I wonder what would happen with the people who live near Johnnie's Food Master in Somerville, which is close to Tufts University. I am talking about the project house which is on the left of the store and the apartments building ,which is across the street from the right side of the store. How do they feel about that? Are they willing to put more money on the foods at Whole Foods Store like the one down the street to Medford 's Whole Food Store?Did you know that these people don't own a car? Where will they find stores to buy cheaper foods close to them?

Why don't you try the Korean's Whole Foods Market Basket next to Market Basket in Burlington? The foods is not bad there! Be careful what you buy at this store, make sure that you get a package that you can read english on the back of the it,so you can be able to read the instruction how to cook the food. Well it so happen that I went to this store and got the foods ,there one package of food
that took that look like a package of "PLASTIC PIECES OF STRINGS",I put its into my salads.Guess what? It taste like plastic strings ,I try to figure out how to cook these plastic strings ,so I try to read the package on the back,it written in Korean,so I had to call the store to find out how to cook these plastic strings. He didn't understand me over the phone, because I couldn't speak well with these plastic strings that got stuck into my TEETH! As an UNEMPLOYED PERSON without a dental insurance,do you know how mush it cost to get these plastic strings out of my TEETH?

And according to another A town web site, YOUR ARLINGTON, the site is writing reports, about the food in restaurants and service at them in town? They seem to be the new Phanton Gourmets in Arlington.
I think it is great. Keep it up..Critical and positive is good.

I just passed by Johnnies Foodmaster while heading home!! I was shocked to see the store closing signs!! I just went there last Sunday!! I've lived in Arlington for nearly six years and would go there to get a few things because it was inexpensive! I have to admitt that the customer service wasn't the best, but I will miss walking down there to pick up a few things!! The country is still hurting badly from the ression! I only hope things get better!! There's already a Whole Foods around the corner at the Fresh Pond Mall. I shop there too to get speciality foods and little it, but prices are too expensive.

Read an article about shopping at Whole Foods; if you look for the 365 bargains, they are there and by hitting the sales and exercising enough will power, you can do as well as a Johnny's or Stop & Shop. It's just that most people get sucked in by all the groovy pricey items. Also, IMHO the health and environmental benefit of an organic pear from Peru is undermined the the fossil fuel burnt to get it here. And some of my best friends are Catholics, by the way.

Ridiculous. Arlington does not need a yuppie upscale food store. It needs a place where our elderly can buy a few items at a decent price. How are they NOT taken into consideration. Prices are outrageous at WF and not much better at Stop N Shop, Many of our elderly don't drive and Johnnies was a place on the bus route. Wrong choice for this town. We have enough upscale food stores in the area. Johnnies isn't perfect, but certainly a better alternative.

As Jon said, " This was a business decision between Johnnies and WF." If Johnnies was 'making it', they would probably not be selling out. When people stop in to get a few low-priced items instead of doing their weekly grocery shopping, this is what happens. When people drive to get the best deals, they're spending money on gas, wear-and-tear on their cars, more time to achieve the task and contribute to more air pollution. I'm not preaching because I'm guilty of this myself, but am attempting to rethink and readjust my activities.

Johnnies was the choice for alot of our Ederly, For now w/only Stop&Shop open, the prices will be less than Whole Foods, but not a bargain except for the loss leaders. I have found the Market Basket store on the Lexxington/Burlington line has the best prices the lowest around, great service, nice people, food, meat, veggies, A+ all the time . Perhaps we can get together and find some transport for our seniors.

Market Basket moves produce like no other grocery chain. Meaning the lowest prices and the freshest produce. Apples 99 cents, all kinds, almost all the time. Compare that to Stop&Shop, Shaws, or Whole Foods. The Chelsea MB is amazing. I suggest MB in Burlington, or MB in Somerville. Whole Foods studies their demographic before deciding to open. They refused a site offered in Winter Hill. Not up to their demographics. Personally, I believe they price higher because their demographic can afford it and is willing to pay. I shop WF for a few select items only. Just as folks prefer Trader Joe's, WF's will do just fine in Arlington and I wouldn't count on them closing anytime soon. The day is coming when none of the regular grocery shops will exist.

Tim, you interpret my post as advocating for WF? Hardly. I would mourn the loss of regular supermarkets but see it coming. Just an observation. As for real estate, the free market demand drives the value. Homeowners view that in a positive light; and buyers view it as a solid investment in their future.

I'll go to Market Basket in Burlington. So now Arlington will have no "budget minded" place to shop. Frankly, I shop at all the stores: Market Basket to save the most money, Johnnie's when I want to go somewhere local, Stop & Shop, when Johnnie's is closed or I need good produce from an Arlington place. The prices are so inflated at Stop and Shop, and for what? Johnnie's was fine. Just like the places we all shopped when we or our parents were children - before everybody felt like shopping should be a quasi-luxury experience. Some people have different allocations for their incomes, I suppose.

Boy, is Arlington changing.. We lived there from 1977-1994, and I work there since 2004. I'm glad to see the influx of new business (there were a lot of storefronts for rent when I lived there), but the death of Foodmaster saddens me greatly. It is a neighborhood, locally owned, non Big Corp store that serves well the local community. WF will charge a lot more for some of the very same items. I am a believer in Organic growing, local sourcing and sustainability, but Foodmaster was a great asset for many people in Arlington.

Nobody has said anything about the fact Johnnies had their own bakeries and what are we going to do without the White Mountain bread? Old Johnny is about 90 I think, he's in Florida, and young Johnny is about 55 - OK? Ten stores really is at the point where you're not big, but too big to be a corner store. I was the son of the son of the son at the family business. Save us. There comes a time if you own it lock stock and barrel, maybe it's time to sell it? But who's going to buy it? At least we were able to shop at a place that was named after the founder while he was still alive! Think "Grandfather Clock" - they never sold another head of lettuce after the old man died .. sort of ... Johnnies and Johnny, linked together. It goes, then he goes, and little Johnny? Well he goes to Zabar's.

I hear was about $38 million, which means about $4 million for each store; not that much really, which tells you something. It was time to sell.

Keene has a Walmart and some large Grocery store just like most places. Sure they put in very nice brickwork in along Main Street, but it's just like any other city/town in it's demographic. Most or all of the "Old Fashioned Stores" have been gone for years. Lots of Restaurants now. If it weren't for the college, Keene would be a ghost town.

If Foodmaster was so great, why was it always empty, even Saturday morning? And the few people I saw there were not necessarily elderly. I would buy a few things there because it was close, but did not do my regular shopping there - poor selection & questionable freshness of perishable food due to low volume.

There is plenty of market for a place that is both good and inexpensive, witness Trader Joe's. Foodmaster was neither.
