How Would You Rate Arlington’s Plowing During the Blizzard of 2013?

Are you satisfied or frustrated with how the town handled the area’s 5th largest snowstorm in history? Let us know by posting a comment below.

Now that the snow has fallen, and started to melt, it’s your time to rate how the town’s plows handled the more than 2 feet of snow that fell Friday and Saturday.

Feel free to give praise or thanks, express frustrations or offer up constructive criticism in the comments below, and keep in mind, the blizzard was the 5th largest snowstorm in New England history.

C-

Roads are narrow, lanes on major routes still blocked, piles of Schmidt in the middle of the street, very little parking along mass ave, schools not cleared and sidewalk in front of town hall and library uncleared.

The snow removal project after Blizzard 2013 was 3rd class. As of today, February 18th, the mess still exists in places where lanes can easily be cleared and made fully usable. take a look at the parking spaces on Mass. Ave.westbound, just past the Fire Station in Arlington Center. They remain full of snow.

That's just one example. Itw as a crappy job all around.

D-: All of the above, along with plows running peacefully down the already cleared center of the street instead of pushing back the banks and zero enforcement of laws against plowing snow out from driveways and sidewalks into the street.

Side Streets are not very good, but considering all the snow they did well, my concern are the schools up the heights, will they be done by morning we are suppose to get freezing rain tomorrow and thinking about the safety of the children walking, I see that Cambridge, Medford, Somerville, St. Agnes have cancelled school, but arlington public has not.......

We only have three winters to judge by and last winter doesn't count. But I remember being shocked by what a great a job they did during the snowstorms in 2010. I was less impressed with the plow jobs (ha) following this last storm, but of course, there was more snow at once, so...

i would say average. town came down my residential street and plowed. during plowing they pushed a bunch of snow on to summer street. cars on summer were going past the double yellow to avoid it. they did clean it up a little but did not do a good job. this was in town owned DPW trucks, big purple ones

They did an excellent job! Those guys work around the clock to make sure the roads are passable. After a major blizzard, I expect it to take a few days before streets are somewhat back to normal. Kudos to the road crews! Next time you see the plows go by, give the guys a smile and a thumbs up. They deserve it.

I agree Sarah. This is hard work, and we need to appreciate that, for as you say, they are out around the clock. They deserve our thanks ...not criticism for their hard work. I wouldn't want to have to do it, and I appreciate their tireless effort !

Steve M The town should give the sub contractors a lesson on plowing. They do not get close enought to the curbs, thats why it is such a mess. Trucks to small for most if not all jobs.

F minus minus ... Just terrible .. Although can anyone explain to me why would you be plowing the cemetery during a storm with nice town 1 ton dump trucks. While streets were being plowed with toy pick up trucks ( home sweet home ) ? Someone flunked

Why Tim?? Because people die everyday and they have to be buried everyday regardless of the weather so the cemetery has to be cleared.

Overall, given the amount of snow, the plow folks did a good job. I am sure they are exhausted by now. I am a little puzzled why they do not get closer to the curb initially. Second, I live on Gray and they are up and down the street ever 3-5 min. I do not think it is necessary to plow the street that often. Especially when there is a ban on driving. This happens with every snow storm. I am afraid there will not be any pavement left.

I think East Arlington is on the list to be plowed last. What a horrible job! I realize the streets are narrow, but get snow plows that can handle the amount of snow we got! The snow ban should have helped tremendously to widen streets, but I didn't see any snow plows that could handle the job!!

It seems to me the Town has hired some people that don't know how to drive trucks .. Yes they were hired becacuse they supposedly the correct drivers licenses . Yes one can have a license but do they know how to handle the equipment ? NO THEY CAN'T ... I saw more town trucks getting stuck in small amounts of snow ..MAYBE IT'S TIME TO PRIVATIZE ALL OF PUBLIC WORKS ... The town would save on the health costs and pension costs and the job would get done right ....

Judging from the previous comments, it seems the fact that we live on a wide avenue means they did a pretty good job, considering. (Minor complaint: it's very disheartening to have cleared the path in front of the house all the way out to the street, only to have the plows come by and pile compacted mountains up at the exit. We then had to hand shovel that mount out, it was too dense for the blower. :-< ) Mostly, though, given the ginormous task, I'm grateful for whatever was done.

Ordinarily I'd rate the this past plowing job as poor. I live on a side street hill and it was only cleared to accomodate the width of one vehicle. The town must be relying on a prolonged warming trend to shrink the substantial snowbanks which extend six feet out from the curb.

seriously... drive through medford, somerville or cambridge and look how bad it is over there. you people don't realize how good you have it. this wasn't a couple inches folks. Be happy the streets are down to pavement, plus if they widen the sides all the snow would go into the sidewalks or your driveways and then you'd all throw it back in the street anyway.

The plows did a great job Friday afternoon when there was 1.5 inches of snow. I saw plenty of them drive down the middle of the street. Unfortunately I haven't seen any since. So I guess they get an F for fraud. Time to hire people who are more concerned with cleaning the street and less concerned about the wear and tear on their trucks. Sorry, got to put the blade down, that's why you get paid.

The fact is over the years the Public Works has been cut to the bone and have to rely on contractors which most are pick up trucks. Those contractors are plumbers, ect. and the like who do this for extra scratch and get paid pretty well but have no clue how to plow snow. They don`t push back to the curb line or the corners and there trucks are under sized. There isnt enough road supervisors to follow these ppl.and make sure there doing what there supposed to be doing..Once upon a time Public Works had the bulk of men and equipment, not now so we are slaves to the contractor and there inferior work. Also the men of Public Works are not Young kids a majority are in there late 40s and up,all of you who complain you should try working 30 plus hours with one hand tied behind your back.Because thats what its like with limited resources both men and machines.Oh ya compared to every town of equal size and tax base Arlington Public Works employees are grossly under paid in comparison..

Steve , sorry they are grossly under paid but it's no excuse to do a terrible job. By the way I was working straight since 6 pm Friday night with a few cat naps here and there and I know what it feels like .. Sorry they had to work too but that's what they signed up for . They gotta work sometime , ya can't sit in the truck on a side street and do nothing everyday . Tiredness is not an excuse for sloppy work ...

I think they did a good job considering the amount of snow we received. Broadway in East Arlington is down to pavement but the side streets are still pretty bad. We just finished our drive (after again cleaning the 2+ feet of snow pushed up by the plows). I expect we will clean the end of the driveway again tomorrow but I am grateful for the job done so far. Drive to Burlington thru Lexington and you will see how much better our plowing is. I agree with Steve, the hired contractors could use some lessons in how to plow. I'm concerned about the kids tomorrow because sidewalks are not clear for them to walk and then there's the 7' mound at each corner to climb over.

To all the town employees of Arlington who were responsible for the snow removal for this storm, you should ALL be ashamed of the job you did, and the supervisors should all be terminated, there were no vehicles on the roads to prevent you from doing a better job than you did my parents live on the corner of Richfield and Saratoga these roads are normally wide enough for 2 cars to pass easily they are all 1 lane wide shame on all of you

Some people in this town just tuck their tails between their legs and are scared to speak up . The snow removal was terrible . It was a terrible job and people want to sugar coat it . In the real world if you do a crappy job over and over again does your boss reward you ? I don't think so . But here it's how dare you speak ill of the town . I would rather speak out about what's wrong than be a kitty cat and hide my tail because of being affraid to say something . Maybe some "Small People" might have learned something from me if paid attention .but instead They Can't Handle The Truth

I think the DPW guys did a pretty good job. Of course there can always be room for improvement, but It's not easy to drive one of those trucks late @ night. I can't blame them for not getting closer to the curb. If the trucks get too close they can damage their vehicle, break their plow & destroy the sidewalk.

This is why it's GREAT that we have no overnight parking. It enables the hardworking guys at the DPW jobs slightly easier when they're NOT zig zagging back & forth avoiding badly parked cars scattered all over the road.

Like another member mentioned, DRIVE to another town and you'll see the difference in amounts of frozen snow piles by the side of the roads.

I was in the DPW yard @ 2am the other night returning from Downtown Boston & it was mess everywhere else. During the 15 minutes I was parked there, it was one truck after another arriving to unload a giant pile of snow/ice.

I'm assuming that caravan of vehicles loading & unloading truckloads of snow & ice went on from 11pm-4am?

Actually yk if that was tuesday night wed morning we all went home at five and returned at eleven to start at twelve am. We hauled until four pm and returned again at midnight. Most of us have been working on very little sleep to accommodate complaints and clean up. I too worked in the real world and complained andade fun of town employees. Now I know first hand it's far from the truth. Those men and trucks u see are run nonstop by the same men day after day and while u all sleep comfy in bed we r out. Yes we chose the job which we take pride in doing so u can wake up and drive to Dunkins. Some of us have over 100 hrs in as little days so instead of complaining come join us at 2am in single digit weather while we fix your water main or clear the snow or remove agree from your house while tangled in the electrical wires. Under paid over worked unappreciated sub par health insurance but I wouldn't change a thing because after a days work or several I go home and can say honest days work! I don't want your job and guaranteed you don't want mine!

Irish whiskey yes there was a driving ban and a parking ban but this is Arlington and you all can drive or park or walk or sled and cross country ski wherever and whenever u want. Which makes are job that much harder. There were people sledding across main roads in the middle of the storm. Makes my job a little harder don't you think. We do the best we can with the resources we have sorry it doesn't meet your expectations but in my book. To the best of my knowledge all medical and police and fire calls were reached safely in z timely fashion So u may not be able to park in a certain spot but no one died no houses burnt down. All emergency vehicles reached there destination safely Now excuse me while I hopefully will be able to enjoy a night at home. First one in 8 days. And for the record I was born and raised in this town. It has changed but its home. U don't like it!? Move! Or run for office and change it.

When it comes to snow removal procedures, I'm going to ASSUME unless multiple cars are literally getting stuck in the side streets, the DPW doesn't have the time to pave EVERY street all the way down to the asphalt & then send a MASSIVE salting truck to spray it down after.

The MAIN streets such as Mass Ave that outsiders use to commute through Arlington I ASSUME would be top priority for the plows. Those would be the same roads the emergency vehicles would take before the going off onto a side road to get to a house to deal with an emergency.

When I drove though Boston @ 11pm Tuesday night, I intentionally drove all around Allston/Brighton/Brookline/Boston/Somerville/Cambridge before I made my way back to East Arlington then towards Lexington. By taking this late night scenic route, it gave me a really good glimpse at how the other towns have handled the snow.

Glad I didn't go EARLIER than 11pm, since most people were off the roads & asleep. The only thing I saw throughout Boston was their public works department removing piles of ice/snow and police officers directing traffic through the process.

Thank g for Deval Patrick's ban & everyone in the city who was given the tasks of driving through that storm. I'll admit, I wasn't too thrilled when I first heard the announcement over the radio. Thought it was quite ridiculous, because people should know better than to stupid & drive around to spectate but nowadays nothing really ceases to amaze me.

If your house/apartment/residence is located on a secluded/private road, there's a good chance you had to dig yourself out. If you don't like what the DPW did, you can always hire a privately own plow company to clear your roads.

Talk to your neighbors on that street, see how much everyone wants to contribute to a plowing fund for the next storm.

Regardless, that driving ban, kept Boston from having needless amounts of cars buried in the middle of the highway. Imagine how much of a pain it would be for various road crews to remove vehicles like that.

Like I mentioned in my last post, the plows can only PUSH the snow. 1 pass is all they get. That's why they go in caravans of 3 vehicles. (Big daddy plow, medium plow, the salting truck.)

It's better for the drivers to be a little further away from the curb than driving too TOO close where you risk damaging/destroying the plow or putting the vehicle out of commission from an accident.

Just so you know, the plows left me 4' - 5' high ice mountain that I had to shovel MANUALLY by myself.
