Bicyclist Runs Stop Sign, Runs Into Car
Incidents and arrests in Arlington on Monday, Nov. 26.
The following information comes from the Arlington Police Department. When arrests are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.
Bicyclist Runs Stop Sign, Runs Into Car
A male bicyclist allegedly blew through a stop sign on the Minuteman bike path at Water Street Monday morning and then ran into the side of a Nissan Altima.
The bicyclist was lying on his back in the street when emergency personnel arrived shortly after 7 a.m. He was transported to Lahey Clinic in Burlington with shoulder and back pain, according to police.
The driver told police that he was traveling away from Mass. Ave. on Water Street at roughly 25 mph and that no one was waiting at the bike path crosswalk on Water Street when he decided to continue on. He said after he went through crosswalk, he looked to his left and saw the bicyclist, who was traveling toward Alewife Station, enter the crosswalk at “full speed.”
He said he immediately stepped on his brakes and swerved to avoid a collision with the bicyclist. However, he was unable to, he said, as the bicyclist struck the rear driver’s side quarter panel of his vehicle. He immediately stopped and called 911, he said.
A witness riding behind the bicyclist on the bike path corroborated the driver’s story, police said.
The vehicle sustained moderate damage to its rear driver’s side door and quarter panel. The bicycle suffered minor damage to its front wheel.

Surprised it hasn't happened more often bicyclists blow through the stop signs at lake st all the time. And then have the nerve to swear at drivers.

It seems as though there's an entire generation of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians that lack the fundamental skills to safely coexist on the road.
Things that were once drilled into kids heads, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, used to be second nature to most people by the age of six.

Bicyclists on Mass ave want to be treated just like cars. Until they don't. '
It serves this guy right. A good bruise, some financial hardship, but no real injuries are the perfect punishment. There is order in the universe.

Unfortunately the few law abiding bicyclists on the road can't escape the ill will perpetuated by those that constantly flaunt breaking the laws of the road. Unless they are struck or strike someone, there is no accountability for those that do not follow the law, commonsense or common courtesy. I think if it were required for the bikes to have license tags to be on the road and thus possibly held accountable for their actions, the roads would be safer for all. Plus income generated by the licensing fee could go towards driver and cyclist safety classes, bike path maintenance, and bike lane maintenance. I hope in this situation the cyclist recovers and is held accountable for the infraction.

As a law-abiding cyclist myself, I agree with you about accountability and courtesy. But I'm not so sure about licensing... It would be inevitable if the roads were as full of bikes as they are of cars. But given the current numbers, do we really want state oversight of bicycles?
In any case, I fully support enforcement, and I hope this careless rider was ticketed.

Licencing and registering bicycles is not a good idea, in my opinion. I think it is rather a dumb idea, at that. But, when a guy like John Kerry, deliberately parks his trillion dollar yatch in Rhode Island, to avoid paying taxes in his own state, is deplorable.
And yet, the voters hold him in high esteem.
And if you think that these billionaire politicians are going to vote themselves a tax increase, you should line up at the pot dispensing store, and start puffing, because it is not going to happen .

What does your comment have to do with bicycles and licensing?
I'm a daily bicyclist - why not license them to adult riders?
Currently police don't have a reliable way to issue tickets - even citations to bicyclists without them having positive ID. It's actually the law to have lights on bikes - not so many of us do. Licensing might encourage bikes to conform better to the rules.

And i don't really want to hear any Mitt Romney counter arguments. Mitt Romney is not an elected official, John Kerry is.

Well, Obamacare, and what companies are thinking, are all over the internet, and business channels. Should employees wait until they get downsized to part time, or maybe find out from their employer what the thinking is? Should they be informed?
This is garbage, in your opinion. But then, i doubt that you have a job in the first place, and you are not worried about it at all.

The time has come to place an excise tax on bicycles --- similar to the tax on motorcycles and automobiles.

Sorry bicylcist hurt but try crossing in front of Town Hall in the crosswalk with riders speeding down the wrong side of Mass Ave thru the crosswalk, happens too often. One rider responded with laughter.

Whether it is a biker or a driver, a stop sign or a red light - let's review the basics:
STOP - verb (used without object)
to come to a stand, as in a course or journey; halt.
to cease moving, proceeding, speaking, acting, operating, etc.; to pause; desist.
to cease; come to an end.
Cf: Roll through; slow down; ignore.
