Arlington Man Reportedly Loses $53,000 in Internet Scam

An Arlington man came into the police station at about 11:20 a.m. Monday to report that he had lost $53,000 in an Internet scam.

In early August, he received an email from a party telling him that he had won $750,000 but to claim his prize he had to send money to numerous locations – in Wisconsin, London and Nigeria. Over the next month, he sent $53,000 to these locations in sums from $3,000-$27,000.

The man had not had any contact with the party since early September. Police gave him an identity theft packet for informational purposes. His banks had already been contacted.

Man Allegedly ‘Jumped’ on Mass. Ave.

A man went to police at about 4:08 p.m. Monday after he was allegedly jumped on Mass. Ave. in Arlington Heights at about 2:30 p.m. that afternoon.

The man said an ex-friend “jumped him by surprise” and that he had a sore right hand and sore ribs from the altercation. He refused medical attention, according to police.

The man said the ex-friend believed that he had engaged in an affair with his wife a couple of years ago. The man said a witness broke up the fight. He did not want to press charges, police said.

Police then spoke with the witness, who said that he was friends with both the alleged victim and the suspect. The witness said the suspect verbally confronted the alleged victim on Mass. Ave. and then instigated the physical confrontation, which he broke up. He told police that there did not appear to be any visible or serious injuries to either party.

Later, the suspect told police that the alleged victim had sold illegal narcotics to his wife a couple of years ago. He said the fight was mutual. He also did not want to press charges, according to police.

Fire at Sunrise Assisted Living

Arlington firefighters responded to Sunrise Assisted Living on Mass. Ave. at about 8:55 a.m. Monday for a report of a fire. Once there, crews learned that a dryer on the first floor appeared to have an electrical fire contained within it. The fire was soon put out with a fire extinguisher, and the room was ventilated. No injuries were reported, according to police.
