Arlington Catholic Basketball Teams Advance

While the Arlington High boys' basketball and girls' hockey teams did not.

 

Today is Friday, March 1. Here are five things you need to know:

1.) The Arlington Catholic boys’ and girls’ basketball teams won Thursday to move on in their respective playoff brackets.

The 5th-seeded boys’ team (15-6) defeated No. 12 Stoneham (11-10) 50-43 at Woburn High School in the first round of the Division 3 North bracket. The Cougars advance to face No. 4 Wayland (17-4) at 7 p.m. Monday in Wayland in the bracket’s quarterfinals.

Following that game, the third-seeded girls’ team (17-6) took the court at Woburn High School and trounced No. 14 Salem (10-11) 59-28 in the first round of the Division 2 North bracket. The girls’ team will face North Andover on Monday in the quarterfinals. The time and place had not been decided yet Thursday night.

2.) The Arlington High boys’ basketball and girls’ hockey teams lost Thursday ending their 2012-2013 campaigns.

The 16th-seeded boys’ basketball team lost 76-52 at undefeated Melrose, the No. 1 seed in the Division 2 North bracket. The Spy Ponders had beaten No. 17 Tewksbury 68-52 Monday at home in the bracket’s preliminary round before losing to 21-0 Melrose in the first round. They finish the season 11-11.

The 19th-seeded girls’ hockey team (12-9-1) lost 2-0 to No. 3 Westford (16-3-2) at the Groton School in the first round of the Division 1 state tournament. Arlington had beaten No. 14 Watertown/Melrose 2-0 Monday in Watertown.

3.) The No. 7 Arlington Catholic girls’ hockey team (15-4-2) will host No. 10 Lexington (13-5-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Ed Burns Arena in the first round of the Division 1 state tournament.

4.) The No. 3 Arlington Catholic boys’ hockey team (11-6-4) will face No. 6 Waltham (12-8-2) at 7 p.m. Sunday at Stoneham Arena in the quarterfinals of the Division 1 North bracket.

5.) There is a slight chance of rain today after 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Otherwise, it should be partly sunny with temperatures reaching 40 degrees.
