A Mother's Dream Realized

Once a newborn struggling to survive, Arlington's Kate Berry has grown up to be the rower of her mother's dreams.

There was a time when Arlington’s Sheila Berry would watch the crew teams practice on the Charles River from a window at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge and she would vow to herself that one day her daughter would be healthy enough to be out there with them.

At the time, Sheila’s daughter, Kate Berry, was a newborn struggling to survive.

Kate was born eight weeks premature on March 28, 1995, at Mount Auburn and weighed just 3 pounds, 8 ounces.

For two months, Kate remained in the hospital under the care of nurse Sue Mahoney, and for two months, her mother anxiously waited, watching the rowers glide by and dreaming of the day when Kate would join them.

Well, that day has come.

Kate, now a healthy 17 year old, is a rower on Buckingham Browne & Nichols crew team, which practices on the Charles.

Last week, Kate, with her mother, visited the nurses at Mount Auburn who cared for her 17 years ago, who helped her mother’s dream come true.
