5 Things to Know About Arlington's Newest 'Gourmet-Food Place'

1.) NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: The Savory Plate opened its doors two-and-a-half months ago at 1346 Massachusetts Ave. in Arlington Heights, the former home of V3 Multisport. Converting the sporting-goods store’s stockroom into a kitchen wasn’t easy, according to Savory Plate’s president, Ken McCord, but so far, so good. “We’ve gotten a great reception from the community,” he said recently. “We’re really happy here.”

2.) THE BASICS: The Savory Plate primarily sells carry-out or prepared foods, with international flavors, cooked from scratch, although it does have seating for eating in (both a lunch and dinner menu), frozen foods and self-catering options as well. “Basically what we sell is gourmet comfort food,” McCord said. The store is open seven days a week – 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday.

3.) IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR: McCord, a retired picture-frame wholesaler, and his wife Jennifer, who live in New Castle, N.H., run the business side of things, while their daughter Caitlin and her husband Jonathan Lyons, of Watertown, run the day-to-day.

4.) POPULAR ITEMS: The store’s sandwiches that incorporate international sauces have been the hot sellers from the get-go, including the Bahn Mi, the Gaucho and the Mediterranean, McCord said.

5.) PRICES: Sandwiches on the lunch menu (which come with a baguette or roll) range from $6.99 to $7.99, depending on if you get chicken, pork or beef. Entrées on the dinner menu (served with vegetables and either a potato or rice dish) start with the half grilled chicken at $8.99 and go to the marinated salmon filet at $14.99. The prepared foods are priced by the pound.
